Far (Father)

A farmer’s son tries to understand what made his younger sister scream in the forest.

Synopsis

A big brother hears his sister scream in the woods. He sees her walk out and tries to ask what happened, but she is catatonic. Eventually she breaks down, and asks him not to go into the forest, but determined to find out who did this to his sister he picks up a pitchfork and heads into the unknown. Only to find his father hanging from a tree, dead.

Beginnings

This film was the very first short film I made, with my classmates at EFC. It dealt with themes of loss and despair that I hadn’t been able to express after my father was diagnosed with cancer back in 2011. Many of my films after this deal with the release of emotions, the loss of a father, and dealing with trauma. All things that I struggled with at the time, and needed to find a creative outlet for.

These themes continued in my next two films, pretty much until I felt I had dealt with them internally. Which makes for the change in my thematic interests in my current filmmaking.

(My father is fine by the way).
