Synopsis

Håkon wants to be a warrior, but as the son of a smith his father won’t let him throw his life away standing up to the town’s leader Uffe. As someone yet again is executed for not paying enough tax to the increasingly unfair Uffe Håkon speaks up, and his father has to step in to make sure Uffe doesn’t kill him too. At dinner that day Håkon tries to reason with his father that they should use the sword that has been passed down in their family to defeat Uffe, but his father tells him that he is too weak to fight.

But during the night the villagers break out, fighting against Uffe, and after escaping the massacre Håkon is faced with Uffe fighting his father. But when he loses his axe and tries to draw their family sword Ulfberht, its stuck in its hilt, and Håkons father is killed. Enraged Håkon attacks, but is not match for the seasoned warrior. Cut and desperate crawling on the ground Håkon tries to draw Ulfbehrt, and in a single swing cuts Uffe across the chest. He crawls to his dying father, who holds the family sword up to Håkon as he dies, signalling that he must carry on the family.

The cast and crew checking the daylies after a long day

Making a viking epic

Underbudgeted, and with almost no time. The crew of Ulfberht and the incredible extras was a group effort that made the impossible possible.

On a two day shoot we managed to gather extras, horses, set a guy on fire, have choreographed sword fights, and film in a viking village on the outskirts of Aarhus, Denmark. With little over 35000DK as my second short film, and one of the most over-ambitious short films in EFC history.

Ulfberht was an incredible learning experience, working with big set-pieces, long takes and time constraints was hugely rewarding. And cemented my belief in myself as a director.
